Crochet Keychain Patterns: Mini Amigurumi in One Sitting
A crochet keychain is a mini amigurumi, usually small enough to fit in a palm, worked with a small hook and finished with a key ring or clasp. It is the fastest way to finish a toy, which is why it is one of the best places for a new crocheter to start. The Keychains and minis folder in 1,947 Amigurumi Patterns holds 140 patterns, and 105 of those have "keychain" or "keyring" in the title.
Why start with a keychain
- It uses a few grams of yarn. A scrap is often enough, so leftover balls finally get a job.
- It finishes in one sitting. A small toy is typically 45 to 60 minutes, and you see the result before you lose interest.
- It teaches the whole process. Magic ring, increases, plain rounds, decreases, stuffing, sewing and a face, all at a small scale.
- It makes a good gift. Palm-sized is the rule for stocking toys, and a keychain fits the toe with room to spare.
What the folder holds
Counted from the titles of the 140 patterns:
- 105 keychains and keyrings: animals, plants and food, from bears, foxes and owls to a cactus, a donut and a mushroom.
- 19 marked beginner or easy, including beginner bird, pig, elephant and owl keychains.
- Animals of every kind: elephants, pandas, koalas, whales, jellyfish, unicorns, dinosaurs and ladybugs.
- Bag charms and other minis, including two crochet earring collections.
- Seasonal minis: 7 Christmas keychains in the Christmas folder, such as a Santa, a gnome and a gingerbread.

Mini designs also turn up under other headings. Across the collection, 55 titles carry "mini", "micro" or "tiny".
What to make first
A small sphere animal works best. These shapes are the easiest:
| Shape | Examples | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sphere | Bear, pig, owl, elephant | Plain single crochet in a spiral |
| Egg | Chick, penguin | Head and body in one piece |
| Flat or half-round | Sun, rainbow, mushroom | Often simple to sew |
| Food and plants | Donut, cactus, avocado | Good for practising colour changes |
Choose a light, smooth yarn so you can see your stitches and count them. Save very small sport weight yarn for later, because small stitches are fiddly.
Hook, yarn and size
Use sport or DK yarn with a 2.0 to 2.5 mm hook, the small-toy setup in the Yarn, Hook & Leftover Calculator. The pattern you choose states its own finished size. Go down a yarn weight if you want the piece smaller. Tight stitches hide the stuffing, and a small piece needs very little of it.
For a small toy of about 10 cm you need roughly 10 to 12 grams of fiberfill, a pair of 6 mm safety eyes (or black yarn to embroider), a contrast scrap of 2 to 4 grams and about 50 cm of black yarn for the nose and mouth.
Attaching the key ring
- Make a loop. Chain a short loop at the top of the piece, or work a strap, so the key ring has something to thread through.
- Or use hardware. Sew a jump ring or lobster clasp into the top seam. Go through the seam several times so it cannot pull out.
- Secure the tail. Weave the tail of your yarn through the loop and fasten off tightly.
- Test the pull. Tug the piece with the ring attached. If anything moves, add more stitches.
Keep the piece tidy. A loose key ring will snag on pockets and bags, so keep the loop short.
Safety and selling notes
- Keychains are not toys for babies and toddlers. Anything with a small part, a clasp or a bead is a choking hazard for very young children. Check the guidance from a recognized body, such as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, for the rules in your region.
- If you plan to sell, the Kitchen Table Stall Kit in the collection states that you may sell the finished handmade toys, but not the patterns themselves, and that character designs that belong to somebody else do not count as your own work.
- Embroider the face if the piece will be handled by children.
Ways to use a handful of minis
- Stocking fillers: palm-sized animals fit in a stocking toe. See Christmas amigurumi patterns.
- Gift toppers: tie a mini to a parcel with the same yarn.
- Matching sets: a bear, a bunny and a cat in the same two colours.
- A learning path: one new skill per mini, as the beginner guide suggests.
